Each month, we post new streaming video from John Stossel on issues that we believe students will find interesting and thought-provoking. Click the link below to view the video, and then take a look at our discussion questions to pursue the ideas in the video further. |

|
1. Is the "better safe than sorry" attitude discussed in the segment intended to make the
patients safer or the doctors safer?
2. Can overwhelming fear of lawsuits actually distract health care workers from focusing on quality patient care? Might it also encourage them to stay focused on doing a good job? What are the trade-offs? 3. If the risk of medical lawsuits is significantly increasing the costs of healthcare, are these lawsuits making healthcare and health insurance less accessible to many people? 4. If even trial lawyers acknowledge that the great majority of obstetricians are competent and careful, why have 76% of them been sued? What can be done to stop lawsuits from being filed without valid cause? 5. If lawsuits are creating all these negative effects, what should be done about it? Should people be prohibited from suing doctors? Should people have the right to sue doctors if they feel they have been harmed by the doctor's negligence or incompetence? What's the solution? |
