"Ending World Poverty" Ideas for Further Discussion

1. Why do you think Bono and others who have championed the cause of ending world poverty encourage people to ask the government to send more money rather than contributing their own money? What would be the pros and cons of each method?

2. What is the best way to get the aid to the people rather to corrupt rulers?

3. If the aid sent can end up in the hands of corrupt government officials, ultimately increasing their power, would it be better to end all aid that goes through governments? Should aid ever be given to governments that deny their people basic economic protections, such as the right to own property?

4. What possibilities are there for distributing aid other then handing it over to governments? What might be the role of the Red Cross or other private organizations?

5. What do you think we could do to encourage corrupt governments to make the kinds of changes that would permit real investment in their countries, which might be able to help pull them out of poverty?
